-
To restore symmetry, shape, and volume after partial or complete removal of the breast.
-
There are three approaches to breast reconstruction:
1) No restoration of the breast mound (Aesthetic Flat Closure)
2) Implant-based Reconstruction
3) Natural-tissue Reconstruction (DIEP, TRAM, PAP, LTP)
Each offers different advantages, and the right choice depends on your preference, anatomy, cancer treatment plan, and personal goals. We guide patients through these options carefully to determine the most appropriate approach.
-
Implant reconstruction uses a silicone or saline implant to restore breast volume and shape. It is generally a shorter procedure with a more straightforward initial recovery.
Natural tissue reconstruction uses your own tissue to create a breast mound that looks and feels more natural.
Often this tissue is harvested from the lower abdominal wall (e.g. DIEP flap), and requires microsurgery to reconnect blood vessels, making it a more advanced and specialized procedure that is not offered in all practices.
While more complex, microsurgical flap reconstruction can provide a softer, more natural result that ages with your body over time.
Both approaches can be appropriate, and the decision is highly individualized.
-
The decision is based on several factors, including your body type, overall health, lifestyle, and preferences regarding recovery and long-term maintenance.
Some patients prefer the simplicity of implants, while others prioritize the natural feel and longevity of tissue-based reconstruction. During consultation, we review these considerations in detail and recommend the option that will provide the most balanced and lasting result for you.
-
Natural tissue reconstruction is a highly specialized microsurgical procedure that requires advanced training and significant experience. It is not routinely offered by all plastic surgeons.
Our practice has extensive experience performing these procedures for patients across the Central Coast, allowing us to offer this option to patients seeking a more natural, tissue-based approach.
-
Implant reconstruction typically involves a shorter initial recovery period.
Natural tissue reconstruction often requires a longer recovery upfront, as it involves both the chest and the donor site (most commonly the abdomen). However, many patients find that the long-term result feels more natural and requires less maintenance over time.
We guide you through each stage of recovery to ensure the process is as smooth and well-supported as possible.
-
Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices and may require replacement or revision over time.
Flap reconstruction uses your own tissue and typically provides a long-lasting result that ages naturally with your body. This can make it an appealing option for patients seeking durability and a more natural long-term outcome.
-
The cost of breast reconstruction depends on your specific procedure and care plan.
Although many patients use insurance, out-of-pocket costs can vary and may be closer than expected to a self-pay approach. Some patients find that a more direct model offers greater clarity and a smoother overall experience.

“What an honor to write a review. Dr. Soares has been such a blessing through my cancer journey. He is so kind, patient, and wonderful. Dr. Soares was so informative in educating me on my options for breast reconstruction and I chose DIEP Flap surgery using my own body to build my breast. He listened to all my concerns. He even came to see me in the hospital on Thanksgiving to check on me. Highly recommend him as a surgeon.”
