Botox and Fillers Q & A

How Does Botox Differ From Dermal Fillers?

Botox is a medication inserted above the brow line to weaken the muscles of your forehead temporarily. When these muscles – responsible for frowning and squinting – are disabled, moderate to deep frown lines are naturally smoothed over to create a young, vibrant appearance.

Dermal fillers serve a different purpose. They’re inserted into areas of fat loss, such as the cheeks or lips, to lift and fill out the face, creating youthful definition, and can also be injected to smooth out laugh lines. Both are safe and approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

What Should I Do to Prepare For My Appointment?

When it comes to Botox, the primary to-do is show up with your wrinkles! Avoid applying makeup before your appointment if possible.

Preparation for injection of dermal fillers requires slightly more work (but we think you can handle it):

  • Discontinue use of NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, and St. John’s Wort 2 weeks prior to your appointment
  • Limit vitamin E intake to under 800 mg per day for the same period
  • Avoid alcohol for a full day before treatment

How Soon Before a Major Event Should I Receive Treatment?

That depends on whether you want to ensure your results are in full effect before the event or just want to ensure that you aren’t experiencing any swelling, bruising, or other noticeable signs of treatment. If you’ve received Botox treatment, your best results will occur about 10 days after treatment, but you won’t have any noticeable signs of injection as early as an hour after treatment. You should receive Botox about 10 days before your event if you’d like to put your best face forward.

If you’re receiving fillers, you might experience mild bruising or swelling for 7-10 days, so you should ensure your appointment is two weeks before the event. Remember, there is always a risk of allergic reaction, so whenever possible, the treatments you receive before your big day should be treatments you have received before.

Is There Anything I Should Tell the Doctors Before Receiving These Treatments?

Answer the doctor’s questions honestly and accurately. They’ll ensure to ask the questions that are important in determining your eligibility for these treatments.
